These plots were created assuming a maximum load of 31 lbs distributed on each wing. This is twice the load for which the team has supplied weights. The reason for doing this is to determine how much the wings will deflect assuming both a gust of wind and dynamic loading due to the impulse upon landing. If the team were to only consider loading during steady stable flight, we would not be prepared for a worst case scenario.
The maximum displacement experienced in this analysis is about 1.2 inches at the tip of the wing.
The maximum stress experienced is about 1500 psi. However, it is taked into account that this high concentration of stress is at a location of the wing where multiple corners are joined together. This exact location is depicted in the graphic above entitled stress plot. It is the location with the brightest mark of red. The amount of stress concentration in the FEA analysis is unrealistic, and therefore it is a value that is taken with a grain of salt. The team beleives that the wing will still hold together at that location even during extreme cases of static and dynamic loading.
